Resolutions for Better Mental Health in the New Year

Written by Marisa Seager

As the year is coming closer to its end, many people will begin to consider how to take better care of themselves in the new year. You know the drill. However, physical health is not the only resolution to be considered. We can also work towards improving our mental health. Here are some changes that you can make to improve mental well-being.

Look after yourself physically

In order to feel better mentally, it is important to consider physical health, as they are linked. Exercise regularly. Even if it is just a short walk, this engagement will likely make you feel good. Eat healthy. Although easier said than done, you can help to alleviate some of your negative feelings just by eating well. Get plenty of sleep. It can be hard to incorporate this into our lives, especially as college students, but the feeling of being well rested can greatly impact alertness, overall mood and daily performance.

Discover a new hobby

It’s always a good idea to get yourself “out there,” so why not start now. Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try? You could join a club or organization, a sports team or simply find new activities to engage in.  By building mastery in something, a sense of pleasure and confidence are promoted, boosting mental health and wellness.

Practice self-care

Just taking a small amount of time for yourself can greatly benefit your psychological health. Plan time. Recharge by doing small things that you enjoy. This could even be used as something to look forward to. Figure out what makes you happy. Try to include some of these things in your daily life or whenever you’re feeling low. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Work on reframing your negative thoughts into positive ones.

Consider taking a break

At times, we could all use a break from social media and the heavy influence of others. Disconnect. Constantly looking at what people are doing and making comparisons is extremely detrimental to the way that we feel about ourselves. You might find that you could be a lot happier without constant insight into the lives of other people.

Reach out

If you feel that you are struggling, know that it is okay to ask someone for help. Specialist support is readily available, no matter what the circumstances are. Work to overcome your challenges and take steps towards the life that you deserve.
